So, while chatting with my associate today, the topic of the New York World's Fair of the early 60s came up, and I realized that I haven't heard of any such event for some years. I wonder what happened to them? After the one in NY, I hadn't gone; but I remember that there was one that I'd missed in New Orleans during the 80s. Hmm... |

Antijitos and a QUESTION Yeah, that photo has nothing to do with antijitos, but it's one of the most recent food photos I've taken, so I figured it would suit the post. The photo shows a really cool gingerbread house that my sister, Sheilagh, built and decorated for Christmas. Sheilagh was on a baking tear this month- she gave us cream cheese chocolate truffles (amazing good) and candy cane candies (yum) to bring home with us Christmas Day and she made cookies, too. I -thought- about making cookies, but didn't really do any baking for Christmas :). Still, the broken wrist is a fresh enough memory, that I'm still grateful to be at a stage that I can putter around the kitchen and cook meals again. Which brings us to the anitjitos. On occasion, John and I go to a restaurant called Montanas, which is part of a Canadian chain of restaurants. They're the typical "stuff on the wall" type place, a bit more rustic, and tend to feature ribs, steaks, that kind of thing. John's favorite appetizer at Montanas are their oven-baked antijitos- a Mexican dish where cheese and peppers are spread on a tortilla, rolled up and baked and then cut into pinwheel slices. He loves thm so much that he'll sometimes suggest going to Montanas just for the antijitos. And he did that last night. Unfortunately, our closest Montanas is in a complex with a large theatre, other restaurants and a massive Indigos bookstore, so the area was a post-Christmas holiday zoo that we decided to escape quickly. We ended up at Swiss Chalet, so no antijitos for John (though he had chicken spring rolls for an appetizer and liked them, too). So, I started to wonder how difficult would it be to make antijitos myself. I went exploring on-line. I didn't realize how popular Montanas antijitos are until I found a handful of food message boards with people desparately looking for the recipe for the antijitos at Montanas :). After I read through a few of those threads I came to a link to a Montanas ad where they published the recipe to their antijitos. Score. I went out this morning and bought all the ingredients- tortilla shells, shredded cheddar, cream cheese, red and green peppers, green onions, Worchestershire sauce- and I'm going to make them this afternoon. We'll see how they compare to the restaurant appetizers. I also bought the ingredients for a turkey meatball soup recipe in the new slowcooker book my sister gave me for Christmas, as well as ingredients for meatloaf, korma chicken and scrambled eggs. It's nice to have a week off and actually feel like doing some cooking. QUESTION: Do you ever cook any Mexican dishes? Which ones are your favorites? Are they hard to make? Have you ever made antijitos before? I must admit the only other Mexican food I make are tacos, where I brown burger and find all the other ingredients in a taco kit box. Current Mood: ambitious |

We had a bit of a glitch with the new TV setup, last night, but forestcats finally found something online that answered our problem, and we finished a disc of Connections 3. |

One other thing: on Christmas Eve, we worked our way through the DVR, gave up on Dollhouse once and for all, and finished the first disc of season five of Lost, which oddly enough actually answered some of the questions, while, of course, raising more. Nice. |

A couple of days ago, I finished reading Tom Holt's historical novel Olympiad, which gives his odd and very human viewpoint of really how the first Olympic Games took place. I found it a fun and engrossing read. |

After a long, sad day working from relatively early in the morning, I was able to get home, change into a new aloha shirt made (exquisitely) by forestcats, and then we went to axelicious & themodeinliz's house for Christmas dinner, highlighted by the presence of the former's parents. It was a lovely time, with good food, good company and good fun. As some might notice, because of getting out and about rather early, I didn't get online until extremely late on Christmas day, so for those of you who find that day important in your worship, I hope it was all you wanted it to be. Over the last couple of days, I finished reading two comics, the first being Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? #7, which is still pretty good, and then Battlefields #1, which was about Australians flying British aircraft in WWII, again pretty good. |

It's here. As of last night, we have a new flat screen plasma TV. However, there was a surprise awaiting me. Instead of hooking up the PS2, the team from Best Buy put in a SurroundSound system; I walked into the house to the fanfare from a Universal film. Wow. We watched a BluRay disc of Serenity that forestcats had picked up, and then followed it by struggling with the new gear until we got some help from the company's phone line to start up the cable. Finally, we watched the first episode of season five of Lost. I say again: "Wow!" |

Pictures in a Book! Okay, so I rarely post pics of myself, because I am the way I am. Here, however, is a picture of me holding a book which has a couple of my photos included within its pages. The Utata Photography group has released their first book, a compilation of the best photos from their annual Big Project from 2007. Since it's all run by volunteers and life frequently interfered, it looked for a long while like this book would never see daylight, but several dedicated members have pulled the rabbit out of the hat. I'm very happy and flattered to be included in the book; Utata has almost 18,000 members, and only about 70 photographers are included in the book. http://www.utata.org/ takes you to the Utata Home page, where there is info about the book on the left sidebar. Busy, busy trying to pull other rabbits out of the hats for Christmas. Mailed off several last minute packages and that's out of my hair, but still need to wrap a bunch of things and clean the joint up. Merry Christmas to all! Hope the holidays are full of joy and peacefulness for all of us. :) Current Mood: busyCurrent Music: Hercules on videotape |

Christmas Poetry Books Every December for more years than I can remember I've always made Christmas poetry books with my class. They're fun, seasonal and creative and they make nice gifts for the kids to take home to their parents by the end of the month. (Photo: They make hardcovers for their books out of bristol board wrapped in giftwrap and they put a title page and a dedication at the front of their books.) ( Young poets at work. (many photos beyond) ) |

Carols, friends and gaming…and a survey
A POLL: So what are your current favourite boardgames? Or what WERE your favourite boardgames as a child?
On the way to meet Allison and Jodi for a Christmas lunch yesterday, I came across these carol singers. They were chatting with each other about what song to sing next but when they noticed that I was taking a photo of them with my iPhone, they immediately posed for this picture. :-)
They started singing a few moments later, and they were really good!

Yesterday was a little odd, for us, as a distant cousin got married in a very Orthodox Jewish ceremony. I was out of my depth, there, as the only other similar ceremony I've ever attended was in 1968 or thereabouts. It was uncomfortably crowded, as the whole community attended. Home again, we got some cleanup chores done, and we had a visit from Dana. And that was the day. |

We had a very busy day, yesterday. Started out that we got into the back bedroom, dumping some stuff, shifting other items to places where they're more likely to get used properly, and so on. Then, we got to work on moving the entertainment system into the living room. A young lady dropped in and spent some time with forestcats riding horseback while I got some laundry done. After she left, we rebuilt the stereo and hooked up the VCR to the living room TV. The PS2 will go into the den with the new TV along with the DVR. Finally, we got ready and went to the Rancho Specialty Hospital Christmas party, and had a reasonably good time; chatted with some folks, ate, danced a bit. Slept like a log... |
